About FBWRA

Friern Barnet and Whetstone Residents’ Association exists to serve the interests of people living in the locality of Friern Barnet and Whetstone. Membership is open to all who reside in that general area and an annual subscription of £5.00 will cover all the members of a household.

We are a non- political and non- aligned organisation.

Many of the actions we pursue are to do with local government decisions which we become involved with on behalf of our members and, indeed, all who live in the affected areas.

FBWRA has origins which are lost in the past. We do know that by the 1920’s, the ‘Friern Barnet Ratepayers’ Association’ was active, covering the area of the then Friern Barnet Urban District Council. This extended from County Gate and Northumberland Road in the North to Wilton Road and Cromwell Road in the South. The modern Coppetts and Oakleigh Wards make up most of this area now.

The Local Government Act of 1963 imposed a new structure for the government of London, turning many former county and metropolitan boroughs, plus UDC’s into 32 London Boroughs. The boroughs of Hendon and Finchley plus the urban districts of Friern Barnet, East Barnet and Barnet were joined together for administrative purposes and renamed the Borough of Barnet. The Borough , as we know it, actually came into being in 1965. However, for membership purposes FBWRA still recognised its old boundaries until 2018. In that year our constitution was amended so that the Association can now recruit members from a wider area. This reflects the changes in society since our formation. Mobility has increased greatly, with shopping, schooling, leisure activities and working now covering a far wider area than ever before
